POPULAR KITE FESTIVAL TO BE HELD TOMORROW IN JOHNSTON

Giant show kites, free kite-building, and live music will draw a crowd to Johnston Commons

JOHNSTON, Iowa --- May 1, 2015 --- The city of Johnston invites you to the second annual Kites on the Green, which will be taking flight tomorrow in Johnston Commons from 10 am to 8 pm.  This FREE, public event will feature giant show kite displays, celebrity bol races, free kite building, elaborate sidewalk art, live music and delicious food. The kite festival will take place in the grassy area near the Johnston Public Library, located at 6700 Merle Hay Road.

Kites on the Green will have some unique attractions - like bol racing and elaborate sidewalk art.  Bol racing is a kite festival tradition of running against the wind pulling an 8’ parachute-style kite.  At 11:30 am, Mayor Dierenfeld will race against Polk County Supervisor Bob Brownell, Johnston Firefighters will take on Johnston Police Officers, and members of the Iowa National Guard will compete against each other.  Mary Poppins will arrive on a Johnston fire truck at 2 pm, and fighting kites will be on display starting at 4 pm.  Dan Wardell from IPTV Kids Clubhouse will host story time on the public flying field at 10:30 am.  Live music and a mass ascension will take place from 5 to 8 pm.

Kites On The Green is the brainchild of Mayor Paula Dierenfeld who loved attending her hometown’s kite festival as a child.  “One of my fondest childhood memories was seeing hundreds of colorful kites fly over the golf course in the small rural town in which I grew up.  Kites On The Green will be a wonderful opportunity for central Iowans to come together for a family-friendly festival as beautiful colors fill the Johnston sky,” Dierenfeld said.
